History

Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan and one of the youngest capitals in Central Asia. The city originated from a small village that hosted a weekly Monday market, from which the name “Dushanbe” (meaning Monday in Persian) was derived. In the early 20th century, Dushanbe developed rapidly after becoming the administrative center of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924.

During the Soviet period, the city was known as Stalinabad and experienced significant industrial, cultural, and infrastructural growth. In 1961, it was renamed Dushanbe and continued to expand as the political and economic center of the republic. After Tajikistan gained independence in 1991, Dushanbe became the capital of the newly sovereign state. Today, the city reflects a blend of historical heritage and modern urban development, symbolizing national identity and progress.
